Result and general impression …
The Crucial MX500 1TB 2.5″ SATA3 SSD CT1000MX500SSD1 does not set new SATA3 speed records, but it is more than just performance in the highly competitive SSD market.
As we could clearly show in our tests, the Micron 64 Layer 3D TLC NAND is quite competitive, but cannot beat its predecessors in all benchmarks and so, at least in terms of performance, the recently tested Crucial BX300 with same controller but Micron 3D MLC NAND clearly ahead.
The Crucial MX500 offers 256-bit AES encryption on the hardware side as well as power failure protection and therefore more security.
Furthermore, the new Crucial MX500 1TB is specified with 360 TBW (total/tera bytes written), which corresponds to approx. 197 GB per day over a period of 5 years. These details are not only important for the warranty (Crucial now gives limited 5-year warranty), but also speaks for a high durability of the NAND cells. If you want to know more about TBW, you can find numerous data and formulas at Micron and in the JEDEC SSD specifications.
All in all, we are convinced of this new technology and are pleased about the higher security, but we would appreciate a bit more performance.
