AMD Ryzen 7 7700X Energy consumption and temperatures …
In terms of power consumption, the AMD Ryzen 7 7700X shows its best side just like the AMD Ryzen 5 7600X and the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X after some tuning! The advancements in the 5nm manufacturing structure size are now in full effect. For a better illustration, we show a comparison table with standard settings as well as the previously mentioned performance preset “PBO, 85°C and Curve Optimizer -20mV”. We also include values from the Ryzen 9 7950X with activated PBO. Cinebench R15 is our review of choice because it is purely CPU-limited and therefore scales very well with the power settings.
CPU | Cinebench R15 | CPU frequency | PC Power consumption |
AMD Ryzen 7 7700X Standard | 3211 cb | 5275 MHz | 209,1 Watt |
AMD Ryzen 7 7700X PBO | 3307 cb | 5501 MHz | 198.1 Watt |
AMD Ryzen 9 7950X Standard | 6127 cb | 5250 MHz | 319.1 Watt |
AMD Ryzen 9 7950X PBO | 6411 cb | 5502 MHz | 300.3 Watt |
AMD Ryzen Heat generation …
With the Performance Preset enabled, the CPU’s power consumption is significantly reduced both under load and idle, and the Cinebench R15 Multi Core benchmark delivers an even higher result due to the overclocking. However, you should not forget that a purely CPU-heavy test was chosen here and only one CPU was tested at a time. With other applications and other AMD Ryzen 7 7700X models, the results can of course deviate from our measurements. The other components of the PC, especially the cooling, also play an important role in the overall performance of a computer and future BIOS updates as well as Windows updates will also influence the performance.
An AMD Ryzen 5600X processor that is already exhausted by PBO and Curve Optimizer is easily outperformed by the new Ryzen 5 7600X with standard settings in Cinebench R15 by 25% and the AMD Ryzen 7 7700X as well as the Ryzen 9 7950X can of course increase this significantly. The CPU was already running strongly at the temperature limit without water cooling, but it did not have to throttle yet thanks to the two strong 120mm fans on the Arctic Freezer 34 eSports Duo air cooler. However, the AIO water cooling was indispensable for a higher AMD Ryzen 9 overclocking. Here you can see a thermal image with the new heatspreader of the AMD CPU without any cooler.
To get an even better impression of the heat distribution on the new AMD Ryzen heatspreader, we have published an interesting video on our OCinside YouTube Channel, where we have filmed the AMD Ryzen processor without a cooler from PC power-on to automatic shutdown with our thermal imaging camera. The IR thermal movie runs at real speed. Even though the protection features of the motherboard and the processor work really great, you should of course never run the CPU without a cooler – so don’t imitate – especially not when you think about the exploding AMD processors, which have been heavily discussed in the last few days 😉
