Today we are looking at a very special combination of different U.2 products on OCinside.de. To be more precise, we test a Crucial P1 1TB M.2 NVMe Gen3 x4 SSD in the Icy Dock EZConvert MB705M2P-B U.2 frame, which was connected in the Icy Dock ToughArmor MB601VK-B U.2 hot-swap removable frame with a Delock SFF 8643 U.2 miniSAS HD cable via the ASRock U.2 Kit on the ASRock X299 Taichi XE Intel LGA 2066 motherboard. Sounds complicated, but is despite Hot-Swap amazing fast!
But let’s start at the beginning, U.2 is an interface that can be connected like the SATA interface via a cable. So if you use e.g. a ASRock X399 Taichi motherboard and already have a U.2 interface, you can connect a U.2 NVM Gen3 x4 SSD or SAS SSD directly to it. If you don’t have a U.2 interface on your motherboard yet, you can upgrade it very inexpensive (available from less than 30,- Euro) with the ASRock U.2 Kit. Who wants to connect a PCIe Gen3 x4 M.2 SSD to the U.2 port can use the Icy Dock EZConvert MB705M2P-B U.2 mounting frame. If the whole thing should also be hot-swappable, this can be used in the Icy Dock ToughArmor MB601VK-B NVMe removable frame. We have tried this exciting U.2 solution!
