Result and general impression …
Let’s start with the biggest disadvantage, the rather poor performance of SSDs used individually. Unfortunately, the OWC Express 4M2 can’t really score here. The speeds are barely above SATA SSDs, which are significantly cheaper and available with a larger capacity.
The OWC Express 4M2 enclosure only shows its strengths when at least 2, but preferably 3 or 4 SSDs are installed and used in a RAID system. Prices for large NVMe SSDs are still quite high, but 4 x 2TB are significantly cheaper than even a single 8TB NVMe SSD. And even 4 x 4TB as a RAID-1-0 configuration can make sense, as you also get higher data security with lower total capacity.
This makes a slim solution possible that only requires one cable for the connection, provides an additional display port and gives you quite large hard disk capacities. For example, anyone who travels with a MacBook but works with a lot of data at home can benefit from a solution like the OWC Express 4M2.
Whether the OWC Express 4M2 is a practical solution therefore depends heavily on the usage scenario. The rather loud fan should also not be neglected. However, if you can “hide” the case a little and don’t place it directly on your desk, you can certainly live with it.
