Ugreen NAS under the hood …
Basically, the Ugreen DXP480T Plus is a mini PC with 4+1 NVMe SSD slots (4x Gen4, 1x Gen3). USB-C and USB-A ports, an HDMI output together with the Core i-5 1235U CPU and up to 64GB RAM result in a small and fast system.
Debian Linux version 12 is running under the hood and, as already mentioned, the SSDs are managed via a software RAID. During setup, the system creates two partitions per SSD.
A smaller one with 16GB and a larger one that uses the rest of the storage space. The small 16GB partitions are then combined as RAID-1 and used as the system disk. The operating system of the NAS then “lives” on this disk. This means that the system is still functional if at least one of the SSDs is still present or working.
For the data volumes, it naturally depends on the RAID level used as to how many SSDs can fail without data loss occurring.
In our test model of the NAS and the current OS version, there were no restrictions regarding the Linux OS. The package repositories also point to the normal Debian repos.
This allows experienced users to install additional software bypassing the graphical user interface of the NAS. As a small test, we did this once with KVM virtualization and a Debian 12 VM. With a little manual work on the routing and the firewall rules, our VM was then accessible in the local network.
Change Green NAS operating system
If you remove the boot SSD from the system, you even have access to the BIOS and with changes to the settings it is even possible to install another OS such as Proxmox or TrueNAS.
We were even able to install a Windows 11 operating system on the Ugreen NAS and run it without any problems.
However, we cannot currently say whether this will also be possible with the series models. It is therefore not necessarily recommended, at least for inexperienced users.
But how this works at all, how to get into the BIOS and what else you need to consider (e.g. always reboot every 30 seconds) when installing a different operating system on the Ugreen DXP480T Plus NAS, we will provide further instructions or a video on our OCinside YouTube channel if required.
